50s Black Hat

SKU: 00563-010

From the 1950s, a neat little black felt hat for day or evening wear. Brimless, face-framing mini-pillbox has pointed and criss-crossed satin piping detail all around, with bows at either side, and a pearly hat pin.

Labels: Haltiwanger's Columbia S.C.
Haltiwanger's was founded in 1905 in the small town of Newberry, South Carolina. Mr. J.W. Haltiwanger and his wife, Susie, moved the business to Columbia in 1913. Their store burned in 1920, sustaining considerable damage, but must have been rebuilt as public records (and this 1950s hat) indicate it was still around in 1945 when a tax dispute was registered. The last image shows the store at 1441 Main St., Columbia, SC.

Fiber/Care: no tags, appears to be wool felt

Condition: looks as if a veil was attached at some point, but it's long gone and the hat is perfectly stylish without. bit of smudge on the front edge of the interior grosgrain band (someone wearing makeup must have worn it tilted forward on her forehead). The hatpin is not perfectly straight (does not effect use at all).

*We've given this cocktail hat the "museum treatment" to make sure it is clean and vermin-free for you.*

Dimensions: size doesn't matter here as it sits on top of your head or at a tilt, however you prefer. It measures 6.25"/16cm wide and 7"/17.5cm front to back. Cracked Betty has a rather small head, so it covers a bit more of hers than it might of yours.

Our items are not newly manufactured "vintage style" pieces. They are true vintage, at least 20 years old. Please read condition report provided above.

Notes: Significant overages in shipping fees (where applicable) will be refunded. International customers are responsible for any taxes or import fees.
