One of the most beautiful pieces of clothing we've ever seen. The materials, the workmanship, the color -- all glorious! Stripes of velvet and smooth midnight blue silk. Long sleeves with turned back faux French-style cuffs. Attached shimmering vanilla-colored silk waistcoat intricately embroidered with crewel-work flowers and insects. Twenty-eight hand-painted decorative hollow-back porcelain buttons. Outer flap pockets. Full quilted silk lining. Closes at the waistcoat with 12 concealed hooks&eyes. A wearable antique. Experts tell us it was likely  created in the 1870s (possibly for a Centennial celebration) and that the inner waistcoat may, in fact, date from the 1780s. The buttons are 18th century hand-painted, two-piece construction, four-hole self-shank, as verified by a button expert.

From the Dunbar estate.

Labels: none

Fiber/Care: appears to be entirely silk, dry-clean carefully

Condition: overall very good. there is what appears to be water damage at the lower left hem through to the lining (waistcoat is unaffected and jacket could be shortened), there is minor exterior damage under the arms and on the sleeves, and interior damage at the neck; one button has been invisibly repaired (see photos)

*This jacket has been professionally dry-cleaned and is ready to wear.*
