Sorry, this item has sold.

Heavy sterling silver bookmark by renowned American silversmiths S. Kirk & Son of Baltimore. The beautiful rose pattern was created by hammering the design from the reverse side -- a metalworking technique called repousse. Because this particular type of bookmark was made over a long period of several decades, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact date. We believe it is from the 1950s, or possibly earlier. The flat front area can be engraved. Would make a lovely gift.

Label: stamped S. Kirk & Co. Sterling 9

background info:  Samuel Kirk opened his first store on Market Street in Baltimore in August 1815. His son, Henry Child Kirk, became a partner in 1846 and the firm's name was changed to Samuel Kirk & Son. Two other sons, Charles and Clarence, were partners from 1861 through 1968, and during that brief period, the name changed to S. Kirk and Sons. Kirk died in 1872. Henry ran the firm alone until 1890, when his son, Henry Child Kirk, Jr., joined the firm. In 1979 S. Kirk & Son. was bought by the Stieff Company and became The Kirk Stieff Company.
