40s Carved Wood Souvenir Shoes

SKU: 00585-001
Sorry, this item has sold.

From the 1940s, these Philippine souvenir shoes were a favorite gift from WWII soldiers to their sweethearts back home. Hand-carved and painted wood soles in red and green with hand-embroidered pink fabric tops. Surprisingly comfortable (recalling the original wooden Dr. Scholl's sandals from the 1970s). I love that the "sky" over the little hut is painted blue.

Labels: no manufacturer's label, but left sole is stamped "Philippines"

Fiber/Care: carved wood, cotton (or perhaps linen) fabric, raffia and thread embroidery, metal grommets

Condition: totally wearable, with minor allover chips and dings to the paint and wood, and what looks to be an old repair and slight tear at the edge of the fabric on the inner side of the right shoe (see photo)

Dimensions: as follows, and also see photo with tape measure
insole: ~9.75"/25cm
width at ball: ~3"/7.5cm
height of heel: ~2.75"/7cm

The shoes fit me nicely, with a bit of room to spare. I wear a size US 7M or a European 37.5/38. My feet are slightly wide. See photo.
